MATANZAS STORMS BACK TO DEFEAT MIDDLEBURG FOR FIRST VICTORY OF THE SEASON

MIDDLEBURG -- The Matanzas Pirates erased a 17 point third quarter deficit to defeat the Middleburg Broncos 35-30 and claim their first win of the season.
Mantanzas running back Tristin Williams-Whyte scored on a 38 yard touch run with 6:06 left in the first quarter to give the Pirates an early 7-0 lead.
Middleburg then scored 24 unanswered points to give the Broncos a 24-7 lead with 7:01 left in third quarter. Trevor Shearin scored on a three yard run and Luke Padgett added a short run for the two point conversion which gave Middleburg an 8-7 lead with 45 seconds left in the opening quarter. Shearin added a one yard run for a score on the last play of the first half which gave the Broncos a 15-7 lead at intermission. Middleburg also added a blocked punt for a safety at the 8:52 in the third quarter to make the score 17-7 and Joe Justino's 32 yard touchdown pass to Laron Bryant gave the Broncos a 24-7 lead.
Matanzas sophomore wide receiver Noah Cundiff jump started the Pirates offense when he took a hand off on a reverse, turned on the jets and raced 74 yards for a touchdown to close the gap to 24-14 with 3:57 left in the third quarter. Cundiff also took another reverse eight yards for a score which made the score 24-21 with 9:59 remaining in the contest.
Back up quarterback Ethan Dattilio lined up at running back, took a pitch from Demonte Neeley, and threw a 50 yard touchdown pass to Gage Winecoff to give the Pirates a 28-24 lead with 7:05 remaining.
Skyelar Williams-Michaud wrapped up the scoring for Matanzas with a one yard scoring run which made the score 35-24 with 3:05 left in the final quarter.
Middleburg added a score with 1:01 left when Joe Justino connected with Trevor Todd for a 39 yard touchdown pass, the two point conversion was no good, and the final score was 35-30.
The win was the first of the season for Matanzas and the Pirates (1-2) host undefeated Port Orange Atlantic (2-0) next week. Middleburg falls to (0-3) and will seek their first win next week when they travel to Jacksonville for a game versus Englewood (1-1).
