JACKSONVILLE -- Ribault's defense scored three touchdowns and stiffened when it mattered most as the Trojans held on to defeat the Robert E. Lee Generals 34-30 in a Gateway Conference match up.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Trojans defense scored the first points of the game with a strip-sack by Eugene Vickers, who fell on the ball in the end zone to give Ribault a 7-0 lead with 5:16 left before halftime.
R.E. Lee answered two minutes and seven seconds later when quarterback Cale Zarah connected with Cobie Bates for a 21 yard touchdown. Zarah and Bates also connected for the two point conversion which gave the Generals an 8-7 lead with 3:09 left before the half.
Trojans quarterback Santana Jackson connected with tight end Chris Johnson on a 60-yard catch-and-run to make the score 14-8 with 36 seconds left in the second quarter. That gave Ribault a six point lead at intermission.
The Generals scored the first points of the second half when Zaire Lee scored on a 12 yard rushing touchdown with 9:22 left in the third quarter. The two point conversion was no good, leaving the score tied at 14.
Lee attempted a fake punt at their own 11 yard line, which was unsuccessful. The special teams miscue proved to be costly because Ribault's Jackson threw a 14 yard touchdown pass to Fredding Manning to give the Trojans a 21-14 lead with 56 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Generals answered the Ribault score one minute and 37 seconds later when Zarah threw his second touchdown pass to Bates. The score covered 24 yards and Zarah connected with Terry McKinney for the two point conversion giving Lee a 22-21 lead with 11:19 left in the game.
The Trojans defense came up big in the fourth quarter. They intercepted Zarah on two consecutive possessions and returned both for scores! Cedric Woodson returned the first one 36 yards and Chris Johnson returned the other 33 yards which gave Ribault a 34-22 lead with 7:41 remaining.
Lee would not go down without a fight however, as Kevonte Doles added a four yard touchdown run with 2:27 left. Doles also ran in the two point conversion to make the score 34-30.
The Generals recovered the onside kick when defensive back Larry Smith caught the ball after it went into the air because of a great bounce.
Ribault's defense had given up over 400 yards of offense, but stiffened up when it mattered the most. Defensive tackle Christopher Sharpe sacked Cale Zarah on first down. The pass attempts on second and third down were incomplete and Travis Laster knocked down Zarrah's fourth down pass to seal the victory.
With the win, the Trojans improve to (2-4) and host neighborhood rival Raines in the Northwest Classic next week.
The loss drops the Generals to (4-2) and next week they host undefeated Columbia (5-0), the top ranked team in Class 6A.
