OCALA -- After losing four of their last five games, the Miami Carol City Chiefs entered their match up versus the Ocala Vanguard Knights reeling. The Chiefs used a lunch pail style running game and a strong defensive effort to defeat the Knights 27-14 at Booster Stadium.
Vanguard scored the first points of the game when defensive back Mykel Randle advanced a fumble 42 yards for a score to give the Knights a 6-0 lead with 2:34 remaining in the first quarter.
Carol City got on the scoreboard with 8:09 left before halftime when freshman quarterback Keyone Jenkins scored on the ground from nine yards out on fourth and goal. The extra point was good and the Chiefs took a 7-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Tywan Cash rushed for 152 yards in the contest including a one yard touchdown run with 7:08 remaining in the third quarter to give Carol City a 14-6 lead. Chris Nelson also contributed with a 12 yards rushing score at the 1:17 mark to put the Chiefs up 21-6 at the end of the third quarter.
Vanguard closed the gap to 21-14 with 8:43 remaining when Steve Curry threw a 26 yard touchdown pass to Dez Dailey and Trevonte Rucker dove in for the two-point conversion.
The Knights had the ball at their own 27 yard line with just over a minute remaining, but Carol City tightened up defensively. The Chiefs came up with two sacks, forced an incompletion, and Willie Floyd returned a fumble for a touchdown on fourth down to seal the win with 12 seconds left.
With the much needed win, Carol City improves to (3-4) while playing a MONSTER schedule. All seven of the Chiefs opponents are ranked in the Associated Press Florida High School Football Polls! The first unranked opponent that they face will be Miami Edison (3-3) next week.
The lost drops Vanguard to (3-2) and they will look to bounce back next week when they travel to play (1-5) Belleview.
