CHAMPAGNAT CATHOLIC LIONS (9-3)
vs.
VICTORY CHRISTIAN STORM (11-1)

Thursday evening's FHSAA Class 2A state championship game will be the fourth consecutive year that the
Hialeah Champagnat Catholic Lions have competed in the 2A final. The Lions 2017 state championship is sandwiched in between two state runner-up finishes in 2016 and 2018. This will also be the fifth appearance in the last seven season for Champagnat Catholic. They also won a Class 2A state championship in 2013 when they defeated this year's opponent Lakeland Victory Christian 14-7 in Orlando.

Champagnat Catholic (9-3) has outscored their first three playoff foes 107-28. They had the luxury of hosting all three schools. After a bye in round one, the Lions dominated Miami Christian 35-7 in round two, blanked Moore Haven 42-0 in round three, and edged Seffner Christian Academy 30-21 in last week's FHSAA Class 2A semifinals.

The Lions offense is led by senior quarterback Ryle Aguila, who has passed for 2,536 with 22 touchdowns and a 71% completion percentage. Aguila also leads the team in rushing yards with 554 and six rushing scores. He will look to get the ball to junior Malik Rutherford who has 39 catches for 691 yards and six touchdowns. Seniors Johnquai Lewis (38 catches 613 yards 6 tds), Cur'mari Dopson (29 catches 519 yards 5 tds), and James Herard (10 catches 228 yards 3 tds) also provide reliable targets. Sophomore Shayon Walton (29 catches 384 yards 2 tds) is another option. The Champagnat running game will be led by Aguila, senior Calvin Montgomery (502 rushing yards 7 tds) and junior Donovan Hones (473 rushing yards 3 tds).

Defensively, Champagnat has recorded five shutout in 2019. The defense is led by a group of six seniors in Jesus Machado (119 solo tackles), Jonathan Nesbit III (64 solo tackles), Kaleb Evans (56 solo tackles), Jalen Harrell (55 solo tackles) Cheyenne Lecour (39 solo tackles, 4 sacks), and Shedrick Ursery (45 solo tackles) . Juniors Walter Phillips (71 solo tackles) and Deondrick Speight (30 solo tackles, 6 sacks) will so contribute.

The Lakeland Victory Christian Storm are making their fourth appearance in a FHSAA state championship game. The Storm won the Class 2A state championship in 2014, they finished as runner-ups in 2013 after a 14-7 loss to Champagnat. Victory Christian also finished as state runner up in 2006 in Class 1B.

The Storm (11-1) punched their ticket to Tallahassee by outscoring their three playoff opponents 98-14 in their three playoff games. Victory Christian had a bye in the first round and hosted all of playoff match ups. In round two they defeated Orangewood Christian 33-7, shutout Foundation Academy 35-0 in round three, and defeated University Christian 20-7 in the semifinal round last week.

Offensively, Victory Christian is led by junior running back Cornelius Shaw. He enters the Class 2A final with 2,004 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns! Senior Kiaun Lockett has contributed 237 yards rushing and three scores. Senior quarterback Jeremiah Byrd added 357 yards rushing and seven touchdowns. He has also passed for 589 yards and eight scores. When Byrd passes, he will look to freshman Preston Smith (22 catches 225 yards 3 tds), senior Keyshawn Covington (16 catches 169 yards 1 td), and senior Caleb Poe (5 catches 135 yards 2 tds) to haul in his passes.

The Storm's defense is led by junior Gabe Jean-Simon (116 tackles), Poe (69 tackles, 4 ints), junior Jeremiah Pauling (96 tackles). Senior Ja'Corey Powell (4 ints), junior Dytreyveon Riley (7 sacks), senior Jaydon Hunter (64 tackles), sophomore Isaiah Reynolds (65 tackles), and junior Tye Harriell (67 tackles) will also contribute to Victory Christian's defensive efforts.
