Hall of Fame Legend Ed Reed Named Bethune-Cookman's Head Football Coach

PUBLISHED
Tue, Dec 27, 2022 6:04 PM
(DAYTONA BEACH, Florida) -- Pro Football Hall of Fame Ed Reed has been named the new Head Football Coach of the Bethune-Cookman University Wildcats. Reed will leave his position as Chief of Staff of his alma mater University of Miami Hurricanes to start assembling his new staff as his Wildcats gear up for their second fall season in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

Terry Sims was relieved of his duties by BCU Athletic Director Reggie Theus after seven years at the helm of the Wildcats' program. Sims finished one game under .500 with a 38-39 overall record during his 7 years and had suffered his first and only loss to state rival FAMU in the Florida Classic in an underwhelming non-acceptable 2-9 2022 campaign.

Reed's hire comes at a time when one of the most prominent coaches Deion Sanders exits to represent black college coaches on the FBS level at Colorado. During his tenure, not only has Deion launched Jackson State as a preeminent college football team as an HBCU with a 12-1 record, but he has utilized his brand to bring major national awareness to the highly skilled players, but also the huge disparity in resources and facilities for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Coach Prime has also helped to sculpture a landscape where former professional football stars are lending their football knowledge and experience to mold young men playing football for a HBCU, with the likes of former Heisman Trophy Winner Eddie George and former Tennessee Titans star RB at Tennessee State University in Nashville. Fast forward to now, where Hall of Famer Ed Reed has agreed to lead as the 16th Head Football Coach of the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats.

ED REED IS ARGUABLY THE BEST SAFETY EVER
Bill Belichick talks about how one of the best plays he witnessed as a coach was a play made by Ed Reed. Not only was Ed Reed known as a physical safety, he will be remembered by both his peers, teammates, coaches, and fans as a cerebral player. One of the smartest players to ever play. Ed and the ball were usually close by.

TIME AT THE U
In the long storied history of The University of Miami, with the rich lineage of players since the dominant Hurricanes of the 1980's and 1990's, Ed Reed IS one of the best players to play as a 'Cane. Ed played at a time when The U was THE U! During Ed's two seasons, 2000 and 2001, Ed excelled... on a historic level. You see that 2001 team... Yes, that U team under Larry Coker went undefeated 12-0, was the Big East Champion, Rose Bowl Champion, and the Consensus National Champion is one of the most legendary collegiate teams EVER, not only because of the championship, but because there were 38 NFL DRAFT PICKS ON THAT ROSTER... THIRTY EIGHT!!! Absolutely Unbelievable. And this team included current Hall of Famer Ed Reed, and future Hall-of-Famers Frank Gore and Andre Johnson, the late Great Sean Taylor, a nearly 10,000 yard NFL career rusher in Clinton Portis. Reed would be crowned 2x consensus All-American for the 2000 and 2001 seasons, when he would have 8 picks and then a school record 9 INTs respectively as a senior.

If one play could sum up the smarts of this Canes player, it would be the play vs. Boston College when Ed Reed took the ball from his own player, to return it for a TD and secure the win:

HIS PASSION IS UNPARALLELED

THE HALL OF FAME
Ed Reed was inducted into the class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio after an illustrious 11 year career. Ed was a first-round draft pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2002, where he go to become an all-time great starring in the vaunted Ravens' defense alongside fellow Hall of Famer and former Miami Hurricane Ray Lewis and inducted into the Baltimore Ravens Ring of Honor

SECOND HALL OF FAME HEAD COACH TO LEAD BETHUNE-COOKMAN
Ed Reed will be the SECOND Pro Hall of Fame Football Coach to lead the Wildcats. Hall of Famer Larry Little, who starred at Bethune-Cookman as a player and was also an anchor for the legendary only perfect NFL team ever, the 1972 Miami Dolphins, led his alma for 8 years from 1983-1991. During the Little era, then Bethune-Cookman College went 45-48-1 as Head Coach, with two winning seasons, garnering MEAC Coach of the Year award in 1984 when his Wildcats went 7-3 and were MEAC Champions. In 1988, although 5-6 overall, Little's Wildcats were 4-2 in conference play and were crowned MEAC co-champions.

FERTILE CENTRAL FLORIDA RECRUITING GROUND
There is MAJOR talent that seeps out of Central Florida to star at major programs nationwide. A big hire like a Pro Football Hall of Famer may lead to some of talent considering to stay play home and star for their hometown or home area Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. Daytona itself houses statewide perennial power Daytona Beach Mainland HS, who was two points shy of capturing the 2022 Class 3S State Title. The Orlando Metro is only 47 miles away via I4. Jacksonville is less than 100 miles via I95. With Ed Reed now running the show as the Head Ball Coach, will it attract those talents to "The World's Most Famous Beach"?
